Bermuda under global spotlight

Speedy: Catamarans, the likes of Emirates Team New Zealand, can be expected to grace the seas of Bermuda if reports that the Island has won the bid for the America's Cup prove correct

The Associated Press report that revealed Bermuda would host the 2017 America’s Cup spread like wildfire across the globe.

Media in the United States, Britain, Continental Europe and Australasia jumped on the story after it was broken by the AP’s Bernie Wilson at about 6.43pm on Thursday.

However, many outlets were quick to point out that Emirates Team New Zealand, one of the main challengers in the showpiece race, claimed they had not been told of the decision.

In San Diego, the AP story was greeted with a mixture of disappointment and defiance.

The city’s Union Times carried the headline “Dissed for dollars”, with claims that its bid had been trumped by a “tax-free experience”.

The article stated: “Not only is San Diego the better place to host the next America’s Cup — the world’s premier sailing event — it might just be the perfect place.

“From facilities, to accommodations, to history, to racing conditions — we trumped Bermuda in nearly every capacity as a potential venue host.

“But there was one thing the Atlantic Ocean island could provide that San Diego couldn’t — a tax-free experience for all the Cup’s participants. What we learned? That even the richest people in the world can sell out.”

Reuters focused on the statement made by Team New Zealand in response to the AP report, saying that the official announcement would be made on December 2. Its report stated: “Organisers of the next America’s Cup regatta will announce their decision on its venue on December 2, challengers Team New Zealand said on Friday, shooting down media reports the holders had decided on Bermuda for the 2017 event.”

Meanwhile the Wall Street Journal carried the headline “Oracle Team USA Picks Bermuda for 2017 America’s Cup”.

Its report stated: “Bermuda won essentially because it offered a better deal, including lower taxes than San Diego.”

On the other side of the world in New Zealand, several newspapers also ran the AP story.

The New Zealand Herald reported: “The tax haven of Bermuda has been picked over San Diego to host the 2017 America’s Cup, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press today. But Team New Zealand says it hasn’t been told of any decision.”

The UK’s Independent and Sailworld.com also picked up of the AP story.

The Independent article stated: “Confident claims from the West Coast of the United States say that San Diego has lost the race with Bermuda to stage the 35th America’s Cup in 2017.

“Tax conditions in the tax haven which is Bermuda are thought to have swung it for the Atlantic financial and tourist destination. It would be the first time that the United States has voluntarily exported a sporting trophy it first won in 1851.”

Sailworld. Com stated: “Emirates Team NZ CEO Grant Dalton said in response to unconfirmed reports that Bermuda had won the right to host the 35th America’s Cup, that the team had not been told of a decision.”
