An extensive collection of more than 4,500 classic films has been donated to the National Library.

The Limbo Up Library, where the DVD collection had previously been housed, will close tomorrow.

The Limbo Up Foundation has made the decision to transfer its library to make the collection more accessible to the public.

The group’s founder, Mike Murphy, told The Royal Gazette: “Over the past five years, the DVD library was run as a free lending library exclusively by local volunteers, from the Somers building on Front Street, but it had only been open for short periods during the week.

“By transferring the DVDs to the National Library, the collection will be available to users six days per week with lending periods running at least eight hours per day.”

Mr Murphy added: “I wish to thank all the volunteers over the past five years whose dedication made the library possible including the current servers, Karen Beckers, Alistaire Border, Sean Dill, Jeannie Flath, Sean O’Connell, Anna Summers and Sherry Wisney-Dodson.”

The library contains a large collection of award-winning films from noted directors, featuring well-known actors dating from the era of silent films to the modern day.

The collection covers German, English, Italian, French, Japanese and American productions as well as smaller documentary films and opera and dance films.

“We are very pleased to receive this very generous donation of more than 4,500 titles,” Joanne Brangman, the librarian at the National Library, said. “I have heard many excellent comments about the quality of the collection and will do my best to see that it reopens for public use no later than January 19, 2015 after it is integrated into our system.”
