Island needs a third incinerator

Tynes Bay facility

November 20, 2014

Dear Sir,

In my opinion, Bermuda needs a third unit for burning trash or horticultural waste as at present we have only two units.

It happened some years ago when one unit had to be taken out of service for maintenance reasons and we were left with only one operational unit, which was not enough. The government of the day spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to bail up waste materials in large two-tonne bails of trash, truck it all the way to Morgan’s Point for storage, and then months later truck it all the way back to Tynes Bay for burning. A third unit of incineration would have solved the problem.

In my opinion, it is going to happen again. A third incineration unit is an absolute necessity and I’ll tell you why: all that horticultural waste piled up in the Pembroke Marsh area will start burning itself again by “spontaneous combustion” like it has done in previous times.

The Tynes Bay incineration units provided extra dollars in electricity made for the government of the day, so let’s give some immediate attention to a third incineration unit.

Our recent two hurricanes have proved that a third incineration unit would be of great help to our Government and our community.

If there were another spontaneous combustion fire, not only would it be annoying to residents of the area, but in the end it would probably be of more cost to the Government and, hence, us taxpayers.
