Mid-fleet finish for sailors in Mexico

Bermuda's Cecilia Wollmann

Bermuda’s Cecilia Wollmann and Cameron Pimental finished seventh and tenth in their respective classes in the Laser Radial fleet, which concluded yesterday at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Veracruz, Mexico.

Both sailors held on to their overnight positions going into yesterday’s final race — and both finished tenth out of 15 boats.

Wollmann finished with 64 points, 20 points away from a top-five finish, with the women’s gold medal won by Philipine Van Aanholt, of Aruba, on 17 points.

Second was Daniela Rivera, of Venezuela, on 25, while Andrea Aldana, of Guatemala, took home bronze with 27.

Pimental totalled 74 points in the ten-race series, well off the medals, which saw Juan Margli of Guatemala take the gold with 13.

Sailors from US Virgin Islands and El Salvador won the silver and bronze on 20 and 35 respectively.

Meanwhile, the Bermuda rugby sevens team went down to three disappointing defeats in their preliminary matches in pool B yesterday.

They lost 46-0 to Colombia, 45-12 to Barbados and 20-5 to Cayman Islands.

It means Bermuda now face a tough quarter-final match against Mexico this morning.
