The Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service has issued a series of Christmas tree safety tips for the holidays.

“As you deck the halls this holiday season, be fire smart,” a spokeswoman for the Fire Service said. “A small fire that spreads to a Christmas tree can grow large very quickly.”

Tips include picking a fresh tree with green needles that do not fall off when touched, cutting two inches from the base of the trunk before placing it in the stand and adding water to the tree stand daily.

Ensure that the tree is not blocking an exit and that it is at least three feet away from any heat source, such as fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents and lights.

When lighting the tree, use only lights approved by a recognised testing laboratory and be aware that some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use.

Replace strings of lights with damaged cords or loose bulb connections and read manufacturer’s instructions for the number of light strands that can safely be connected.

Never use lit candles to decorate trees and always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed. Dispose of the tree after Christmas or when it is dry because as dried-out trees are a fire hazard and should not be left in the home or garage, or placed outside against the home.

Check with your local community to find a recycling programme.

Bring outdoor electrical lights inside after the holidays to prevent hazards and make them last longer.
