Corporation seeks permission for new marina

Marina proposal: Barr’s Bay Park in Hamilton

The Corporation of Hamilton has applied for planning permission to install a new marina at Barr’s Bay Park.

According to the application, it is hoped the 17-berth marina will make the city more accessible by boat.

The application also argues that Barr’s Bay Park would be an ideal location for such a project because it is largely protected from wind and waves, as well as being a short walking distance from the centre of the city.

“Docking will be for short-term visitors to the city and controlled by ‘pay and display’ or similar methods to discourage long-term or overnight usage,” the application states.

Of the 17 berths, the majority will be designed for smaller boats. Six berths will have a 25ft maximum, while another four will have a 30ft maximum. The largest berth on the site will fit a vessel up to 65ft in length. The application also notes that the Corporation and the neighbouring Royal Bermuda Yacht Club have had some discussions regarding the proposal.

“After the first meeting, the proposal for the Barr’s Bay Park docks was scaled back to the plan in the application.

“We believe that the Corporation of Hamilton has rights to enjoy the potential of their water front and this application, while less than desired, is very reasonable and is a workable solution.”

The planning application is available for viewing at the offices of the Planning Department in the Dame Lois Browne Evans building.
