Four of Bermuda’s young cricketers will be given a chance to earn a contract with the Caribbean Premier League when they begin a training camp in Barbados tomorrow.

Delray Rawlins, Onias Bascome, Tre Manders and Christian Burgess will attend the ICC Americas Talent Development Camp for a week, and at the end may find themselves assigned to one of the six CPL franchises.

The four Bermuda players will join five players from Canada, and three players from the USA at the camp, and will play in three Twenty20 matches and two 50 over games over the course of camp.

One player from the Americas region will then be assigned to each of the franchises and invited to the training camps being held ahead of the tournament. The young cricketers will join four players from the West Indies Under-19 squad who will also be assigned to each of the franchises and attend the training camps.

Ben Kavenagh, the ICC Americas Regional Development Manager, has welcomed the opportunity being afforded to the cricketers from the Americas, while CPL officials said that coaches felt their was enough talent at the under-19 level to warrant the move.

“This provides an excellent opportunity for a young player to get a taste of life as a professional cricketer — the travel, the daily practice sessions and the intensity of the actual competition,” Michael Hall, the CPL cricket operations director, said. “We took the decision based on feedback from the coaches who were involved last year — they all felt that there was enough talent at the under-19 level to warrant creating an additional roster spot for one of them.”
