Sick sailor ‘responding well’ to treatment

Airlifted: a C130 aircraft brought the Naval sailor to Bermuda

A sick Navy sailor who was brought to Bermuda for treatment is making good progress.

The 34-year-old man was airlifted from the naval vessel by US Coastguard crews on Saturday morning and transferred to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

Bermuda Radio helped to coordinate the rescue operation that involved the Coast Guard’s helicopter and C130 aircraft flying to the Island on Friday.

An incident report by Bermuda Radio said: “RCC Bermuda received a satellite telephone call from a US Navy Ship reporting crew member with suspected renal failure.

“RCC Norfolk were contacted and the ship was advised to close on Bermuda and a C130 aircraft and HH60 helicopter were tasked from Elizabeth City Airforce Base to Bermuda. Both aircraft arrived in Bermuda on the afternoon of Friday, December 19, and flew out to rendevouz with the casualty on the morning of Saturday, December 20.

“The patient arrived back at Bermuda International Airport at 12:30pm and was transferred to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital. The patient, a 43-year-old male, was reported to be responding well to treatment.”
