A man seriously injured on Friday in a crash on South Road remains in critical condition this afternoon.

The 47-year-old Devonshire man reportedly sustained “very serious” head injuries after he grazed one car and struck a second head on near the junction with Camp Hill Road.

Police spokesman Dwayne Caines said on Friday: “At about 4.33pm Police responded to a report of a road traffic collision that took place on South Road. It appears that two cycles were travelling east on that road when one of the riders sideswiped one car and then hit head-on with another vehicle that was travelling in the opposite direction.

“That man was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, where he is listed in very serious condition.”

As of Sunday afternoon, the injured man remained in critical condition in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.

While Mr Caines said that a number of witnesses have already come forward, he urged anyone who may have left the scene to contact the Road Policing Unit on 295-0011.

Mr Caines also noted the rash of serious traffic collisions in recent days that have taken the lives of 19-year-old Stephen Edwards and 62-year-old Timothy Wright.

“Whilst not speaking to this specific collision in which we don’t have all of the details, we have had 15 road traffic fatalities for 2014 and indeed we have had one for 2015,” he said. “The message is very clear. We must slow down on our roads simply because we are seeing a lot of more serious road traffic collisions, specifically in the last two to three months.

“We are asking people to slow down on the roads and consider other drivers on the road and to obey the rules of the road. Something as simple as using a seatbelt, something as simple as fastening your helmet. It’s very simple advice, but those little tidbits can save someone’s life.”
