Douglas determined to clear his name

Ill-fated: the events surrounding Bermuda’s poor performance in Malaysia ultimately led to Douglas’s removal from the BCB

Allan Douglas has appealed Bermuda Cricket Board’s decision to remove him from his position as second vice-president.

Douglas was removed by a vote of no confidence after the Board conducted an investigation into Bermuda’s dismal performance at the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Division Three tournament in Malaysia last October.

The former Bermuda player, who was also the BCB’s director of coaching and the acting national coach on the tour, believes his removal from the governing body to be unconstitutional and undemocratic.

In an attempt to clear his name and win reinstatement to the executive, Douglas has taken his case to the Alternate Dispute Resolution arbitration panel, at the Sports Ministry.

Norbert Simons, the ministry’s director of sports, confirmed yesterday that the former Cleveland County and St George’s Cup Match player had submitted a formal complaint to the ADR.

“A request has come for us to submit a document to the ADR and we are in the process of making contact with the ADR,” Simons said.

“[Douglas] is asking for his case to be taken to arbitration and we will forward it to the ADR secretary and they will meet and determine if he has a case to answer.

“If he does then they will empanel the tribunal or dispute resolution board to deal with it.”

In a statement released last month, the BCB said the decision to remove Douglas was taken after careful consideration, and was based on a report into the tour compiled by Nyon Steede, the BCB first vice-president.

“In the course of compiling the report, the committee interviewed six players and all four tour management staff members,” read the statement.

“The comprehensive report collated responses from the participants on five prepared questions. The executive gave full consideration to the report and then met with acting national coach and BCB second vice-president Mr Douglas. After a careful and thorough deliberation, the executive passed a vote of no-confidence in Mr Douglas and removed him from the Board.”

Bermuda were relegated from Division Three after finishing last at the tournament in Malaysia, much to the dismay of Lloyd Fray, the BCB president.

“The significant under performance of the Bermuda national team in the recent tournament is a matter that the Board is taking very seriously,” Fray said at the time. “There are a number of areas highlighted in the review that need to be addressed and we are working on them expeditiously.”
