Lambert in running for BLTA presidency

Top job: Lambert will run the for BLTA presidency

David Lambert will run for the presidency of the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association at the governing body’s next annual general meeting.

Lambert, who serves as the BLTA vice-president at present and chairman of the association’s Professional Tennis Registry, is seeking a fifth term as president.

The 59-year-old announced his intention to run for the BLTA’s top post at a board meeting last month.

It is understood that the AGM will be held before the end of March.

“At the last board meeting I informed the board that I have intentions to put my name forward with a slate and I have also called the president of every club and spoken to them,” Lambert said.

“I have informed every officer of the BLTA because I wanted everyone to know from the board of directors’ point of view of my intentions.”

Lambert previously served as the BLTA president from 1995 to 1998, 1999 to 2001, 2002 to 2004 and again from 2007 to 2011.

During those 11 years in office, he served on many successful committees that helped to elevate local tennis and establish the BLTA as a full member of the International Tennis Federation (ITF).

He also served on the organising committee that hosted Davis Cup tennis at The Fairmont Southampton in the late 1990s and has raised considerable funding to enable Bermuda’s young players to represent the Island around the world through his heavy involvement with the Elbow Beach Tennis Club Celebrity Classic.

It is this proven track record that Lambert is pinning his hopes upon for re-election.

“I have been very, very fortunate to be a part of committees that were very proactive and successfully achieved a lot,” said Lambert, whose contributions to local tennis were honoured by the ITF in 2009. “I have been involved with the BLTA for a good part of my life and it is something that I enjoy.

“Of course, for me to run is one thing and to get back voted in is up to the clubs. You can only be voted into the BLTA as an officer if you have the clubs supporting you.“

If re-elected, Lambert’s mandate would be to build upon the foundations already in place at the BLTA.

“I feel we can add to what has already been structured,” said Lambert, who also serves on the organising committee for the Bank of Bermuda Foundation/ITF world-ranking tournament.

“I think we can add to the calendar and have additional BLTA-sanctioned ranking events.”

Lambert stepped down as the president at the association’s 2011 AGM and was succeeded by long-time friend and doubles partner Coleridge Place.
