Attempted murder trial begins

The trial of a man accused of shooting a 23-year-old began yesterday, with prosecutors making their opening remarks.

Blaine Simmons, 20, has denied attempting to murder Lo’Torean Durrant on March 19, 2013, and using a firearm to commit an indictable offence. Prosecutor Maria Sofianos opened the trial for the Crown in Supreme Court yesterday morning, telling the jury that sometime after 9pm on the day in question, Mr Durrant took a taxi to his home on Scott’s Hill Road, Sandys.

After getting out of the taxi, Ms Sofianos said that the victim saw something that startled him and began to run.

He was chased by a man whom prosecutors believe to be Mr Simmons. The attacker shot Mr Durrant and walked away, leaving the victim lying in the street suffering from serious injuries.

“We say the intent was to kill, and a firearm was used to commit this offence,” Ms Sofianos said.

Prosecutors allege that after the shooting, Mr Simmons was joined by a second man and walked to a home on Acacia Lane before travelling in a car to a property on Broome Street.

Mr Simmons was subsequently arrested at the Broome Street house, where Ms Sofianos said officers found him “smelling strongly of soap” and acting nervously.

Investigators found gunshot residue particles on his clothes, on his cellphone and inside the car that prosecutors allege he travelled in that evening. The trial continues.
