From youngsters suffering cancer and quadriplegia, to those undergoing heart transplants and recovering from strokes, Kids of Courage provides crucial support to the children that need it the most.

The New York-based charity — which runs adventure programmes and community weekends allowing seriously sick children the chance to enjoy a break from their daily struggles — is taking part in this year’s Bermuda Marathon Weekend to raise much-needed funds.

A group of 50 sponsored runners will be on the Island, collecting donations towards the organisation which supports children and their families all over the United States.

According to Marc Gamms, one of the organisers, the charity is taking advantage of the increasing popularity of running.

“People have started running a little more than they used to, so we saw this as a nice opportunity to raise money for a good cause,” said Gamms.

But while the main aim is to generate funds, participants are eagerly awaiting their own break from the cold New York weather.

“We were looking for a nice winter destination,” said Gamms. “It seems as if Bermuda at this time of year is not as warm as Miami or the Caribbean, which of course means it will be much better conditions for running.

“I’ve heard it rains a bit in January, but we don’t mind that because it’s an escape from New York which is very cold at the moment.”

As well as putting on events for sick children, Kids of Courage also connects them with adult mentors through a big brothers and sisters initiative, and puts volunteers in place at hospitals to relieve some of the strain from their families.

Its goal is to provide practical and emotional support for sick children and their families, and open the world to youngsters who would otherwise be confined to their homes and hospitals.

The group also aims to involve the community by recruiting volunteers, so it can educate about inclusion and diversity.
