Bermuda CableVision’s annual Community Service Award recipients are the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service, emergency medical technicians, Bermuda Police Service and the Bermuda Regiment, at their tenth annual “salute to service” banquet on Saturday evening at the Fairmont Southampton.

CableVision said they were rewarded for “for going beyond the call of duty to protect the Island and its people”.

The company also made a $50,000 donation to the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club (RBYC) Sailing Academy, and recognised Family Centre founder and executive director Martha Dismont with the Rollin Nathan Award.

Assistant general manager Alan Smith explained that Rollin Nathan, who is an employee at CableVision: “is the person behind the scenes, working quietly, developing the theme, finding the award recipients and organising the entertainment”.

He said: “It was Rollin’s idea to create an award to recognise members of the community who spent their time helping others.”

Terry Roberson, CableVision chief executive officer, told the audience, which included Governor George Fergusson, US Consul General Robert Settje and Premier Michael Dunkley, that CableVision had selected “service above self” as the theme “to celebrate Bermuda’s brave men and women who work in essential services”.

Mr Roberson said: “The men and women of Bermuda’s essential service organisations who we honoured tonight work very hard to make Bermuda a better place.

“We can sleep soundly at night because of their brave commitment to serving and protecting their community.

“They were selected this year because of their unwavering commitment to the community.

“All of these organisations are there for us when we need them the most and they work hard to protect and serve the community.”

The men and women “put service above self and put their lives on the line on a daily basis. They are extraordinary.”

Mr Roberson added: “Ms Dismont is a hero for her tireless work to help Bermuda’s children.”

Ms Dismont was honoured for her work helping Bermuda’s families, and the RBYC Sailing Academy was awarded $50,000 to purchase four SL16 Catamarans to be used by young sailors.

Mr Roberson said: “Each recipient has made Bermuda a better place to live with their time and their talent.”

Bermuda CableVision’s next Community Service Award will be presented in April 2015.

The public are asked to nominate any individual residing in Bermuda who has shown outstanding community service through participation in a school, church, charity organisation, or through their own determination.
