Duck killing under investigation

The killing of a bird within the Spittal Pond nature reserve is being looked into by Conservation Services after birdwatchers mounted a Facebook campaign to find the person responsible.

A man throwing a stone on January 11 was caught on camera by a member of the public, and subsequently identified, after the rock killed a duck at the Smith’s wetland sanctuary.

Speaking with The Royal Gazette, a member of the Bermuda Audubon Society cautioned that it was unknown whether the killing had been intentional.

“The matter is under investigation and it is therefore not appropriate to comment at this time,” a Conservation Services spokeswoman said. “However, we can confirm that it was a wild migratory mallard that was killed in the protected Spittal Pond Reserve.”
