Respiratory illness baffles doctors

Dcotors have been unable to diagnose a Devonshire man's "mystery" illness

The family of a Devonshire man stricken with a “mystery” ailment that leaves him struggling for air have appealed for the public’s help in identifying his illness.

The condition, which his sister said began abruptly on December 1, has eluded diagnosis. The man’s family claim that Emergency Room staff at the hospital have suggested he required psychiatric treatment.

The man, who has continued working to meet his bills, requested not to be named for this article out of fear that his condition could jeopardise his job.

“It is painful to watch him gasping for air each and every day, especially because there is nothing we as a family can do to help,” his sister told The Royal Gazette.

Prescribed antipsychotic medication, her brother has taken it “out of desperation”, but seen no change in his symptoms: severe breathing attacks in which his throat closes.

“His doctor has sent him for several tests, but they have all come back normal,” she said.

“He is also taking asthma inhalers, antihistamines, antibiotics, probiotics and muscle relaxants.

“None of these medications stop his throat from closing.

“He has undergone several tests, including an endoscopy, lung function, allergy testing, blood and stool testing. All of these have come back negative. He therefore has not been treated, because the doctors cannot make a diagnosis.”

Asked if her brother had altered anything in his lifestyle in the run-up to the onset of symptoms, she said: “We have sat down and tried to think about what’s changed. His diet hasn’t changed in the last ten years. Nothing has changed in his habits.

“He doesn’t smoke and doesn’t drink alcohol.

“He’s 27 years old and was leading a normal life until December 1.”
