Cagliari to host first race

Cagliari-based Luna Rossa

America’s Cup organisers have announced that Cagliari in Sardinia will be the first stop on the 2015-16 America’s Cup World Series.

The three-day fleet racing regatta will take place in the Gulf surrounding the Island’s capital from June 4 to 7.

The World Series is the result of a collaboration between Sardinia, Cagliari, the Port Authorities, the Navy and Luna Rossa, the team that has chosen Cagliari for its operations base to prepare for the 35th America’s Cup.

All six teams entered in the 35th America’s Cup — Oracle Team USA, Artemis Racing, Ben Ainslie Racing, Emirates Team New Zealand, Luna Rossa Challenge and Team France — will take part in the regatta.

The event will be contested in the wing sail AC45 catamaran that has been modified to foil like its larger cousins, the AC62 and AC72. Bermuda will host the America’s Cup World Series from October 16 to 18. The remaining World Series events will be held in Portsmouth from July 23 to 26 and Gothenburg, Sweden, from August 28 to 30.

The World Series is the first stage in the 35th America’s Cup. Featuring all of the America’s Cup syndicates, the circuit is an early opportunity to put points on the board that carry forward into the next stage of the competition.

Overall ranking position in the World Series determines the starting points score of the teams in the America’s Challenger Qualifiers in 2017.
