Ben Zoellner, the national 450cc motocross champion, maintained his impressive unbeaten streak in points races at the Bermuda Motorsports Park yesterday.

Not even muddy conditions could put the brakes on the 35-year-old rider’s relentless charge for a second straight national title.

Zoellner, who hails from Liverpool, swept all three heats in his division and has now won all six points races for the campaign so far.

That flawless display enabled the Bermuda Motors employee to put more distance between himself and the chasing pack in the overall 450cc points championship and kept him firmly in the driver’s seat to defend his national title.

“It was awesome racing today,” Zoellner said. “I heard the rain come down very hard around 4am and I thought we would not be riding today. But I came down here and the track was in pretty good condition.

“The track was fine so I was wide open and the faster you went, the easier it was.

“I’m pleased with my performance and I have to thank Ernie DeMello. He bought me some tyres and it came in as a consideration today because of the mud.”

Zoellner was not the only rider managing three victories as promising pair Zendai Ingham-Fubler and Rajae Whitter achieved the same feat in their respective divisions.

Teenager Ingham-Fubler won all of the heats in the 125cc Novice class to extend his lead in the championship.

“It was a great day,” the Clearwater Middle School student said. “It was very muddy and slippery, but I made out OK.”

Whitter was unstoppable in the 50cc class, reeling off a hat-trick of victories to extend his lead in the championship.

“I was very pleased with my performance because I did well and my dad said I did too,” the Prospect Primary student said.

“The track was muddy and it was hard to get through the mud.

“It was so muddy that I had to stand up and put the gas wide open, and it worked.”

Another youngster offering a glimpse of his potential was 85cc points leader, Keon Glasford, who extended his lead in championship after posting two victories.

“I had a good day,” the Harrington Sound Primary student said.

“It was muddy, but I did OK. I went faster, which is the easiest way to go through the mud.”

Motocross racing resumes at the Southside racetrack on February 8.
