The Bermudian who was arrested in Guyana on Saturday after being suspected for carrying cocaine pellets in her stomach has been sentenced to four years in New Amsterdam Prison for trafficking narcotics.

Njere Fubler, 23, of Fenton Drive, Pembroke, pleaded guilty yesterday to the offence at Georgetown Magistrates Court before Magistrate Ann McLennon after being found to have 551 grams of cocaine contained in pellets in her stomach.

She has also been fined GYD$1.48 million (about $7,000). Her sentence begins with immediate effect.

Ms Fubler was stopped last Saturday at Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, to the south of Georgetown, as she prepared to return to Bermuda.

An X-ray showed a foreign substance that was later confirmed as being a number of cocaine pellets. She was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where she remained under police guard for medical assessment and to pass the pellets through her system.

Once found to be medically fit, and all the pellets had passed, Ms Fubler was taken to court where she was charged and convicted of trafficking narcotics.

Police are not aware of any other parties involved in the operation, but an investigation is continuing.
