Foursome reach Carifta standard

Aiming high: high jumper Famous

Four athletes reached the qualifying standard for the Carifta Games during the first track meet of the year on Saturday.

Hosted by Flyers Track Club at the National Sports Centre, Sakari Famous and Jah-Nhai Perinchief, last year’s Carifta silver medal winners, won their high jump events.

Famous and Mikayla Wilson both qualified in the under-18 girls’ high jump when they reached the qualifying mark of 1.55 metres.

Famous finished first with a best leap of 1.60 while Wilson had a best jump of 1.55 metres to place second. Azaire Smith was third with a leap of 1.50.

Perinchief equalled the boys under-20 qualifying mark of 1.95, while Tara DeRosa easily achieved the qualification mark of 29.80 in the girls’ discus with her best throw of 37.06.

Kyrah Scraders, who won a gold and a silver medal last year in Martinique, missed qualifying for the under-20 1,500 metres by three seconds, recording a time of 5:05.06. The qualifying mark is 5:02.

Messiah Greaves won the under-17 400 and 1,500, although she was outside the qualifying mark on both occasions. She ran a time of 1:02.6 in the 400 and 5:21.08 in the 1,500. The qualifying times are 57sec and 5min respectively.

Michiah Robinson narrowly missed reaching the qualifying mark of 48.5 seconds in the under-18 400. His winning time was 50.52sec.

This year’s Carifta Games will be held on St Kitts and Nevis from April 4 to 6. Another track meet will be held on Saturday, hosted by the Bermuda National Athletic Association, starting at 1pm.
