Almost 100 people turned out to hear a Progressive Labour Party town hall meeting this week against what the Opposition has branded the privatisation of LF Wade International Airport.

The Bermuda Government, meanwhile, has disputed that a proposal to redevelop the airport terminal through a public-private partnership with the Canadian Commercial Corporation represents privatisation.

The plans, announced on November 10, were the topic of Tuesday night’s meeting at Purvis Primary School, which was moderated by Lt Col David Burch. David Burt, the Shadow Minister for Finance, called the proposal “a bad deal for Bermuda”, adding that, under the present economic conditions, “now is not the time to give away one of the few government departments that make money”.

Lawrence Scott, the Shadow Minister for Transport, said the Opposition would continue with what he described as a campaign to educate and inform the public and ensuring that Bermudian interests were protected.

The One Bermuda Alliance, he said, “should not be allowed to marginalise Bermudians and allow foreign interests to prevail”.
