DeRosa qualifies for second event

Met the mark: DeRosa will compete for Bermuda in the girls' under-18 shot put and discus at this year's Carifta Games

Tiari DeRosa met the qualifying standard in the girls’ under-18 shot put for the Carifta Games at the second athletics meet of the year at the weekend.

DeRosa, who had already qualified in the under-18 discus the previous weekend, met the shot qualifying mark (11.83 metres) with a throw of 12.25 at the National Sports Centre.

For the second successive meet DeRosa reached the standard in the discus (29.80) with a throw of 33.05. Her throw the previous weekend was 37.06.

DeRosa finished sixth in the under-18 girls’ discus event at last year’s Games in Martinique with a throw of 35.28. She also came thirteenth in the shot with a best effort of 11.84.

Three athletes qualified for the Games during the first athletics meet of the year the previous weekend.

They were Sakari Famous and Mikayla Wilson, both girls’ under-18 high jump, and Jah-Nai Perinchief in the boys’ under-20 high jump.

Donna Watson, the Bermuda National Athletics Association president, said that the wet and windy weather at the weekend was not conducive for good times or distances.

The Carifta Games will be held in St Kitts and Nevis from April 4 to 6.
