Junior Reid vows to ‘bring the fire’

Junior Reid

When it comes to reggae, veteran crooner Junior Reid ranks among the very best in the business.

And the best, the Jamaican singer-producer stressed, is exactly what local reggae enthusiasts can expect from him this weekend.

Mr Reid is performing at BAA gym this Saturday as part of the Legend Bob Marley tribute concert.

The Grammy Award nominee is quite familiar with Bermuda having performed here with Black Uhuru in the 1980s and more recently as a solo artist.

Among his many hits is One Blood, a song that’s become an anthem for unity around the world.

“I am looking forward to coming back to Bermuda,” Mr Reid told The Royal Gazette. “The fans should not dress warm because I am going to bring the fire.”

Mr Reid recorded his first single, Speak the Truth, for the late Hugh Mundell. He was 13 at the time.

The artist was sitting in a car with Mr Mundell, who also toured Bermuda, when he was shot dead during a heated dispute with another man in 1983. The man was eventually convicted of manslaughter.

Mr Reid was “commissioned” by the late Sugar Minott to record a string of tunes on his Youth Promotion label.

His first album with Black Uhuru was so popular that it was nominated for a Grammy.

His desire to produce his own material drove Mr Reid to go solo. He formed his own studio, One Blood Recording Studio, and his own label, JR Productions.

Mr Reid’s 1988 collaboration with Coldcut peaked at number 21 in the United Kingdom. It was eventually surpassed by I’m Free, a song he recorded with The Soup Dragons.

The veteran reggae artist has produced for legends such as the late Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Big Youth and the Mighty Diamonds.

He performed alongside Alicia Keys at the American Music Awards in 2007.

On Saturday he will share the stage with Grammy winner Yami Bolo, whom he mentored back in the day.

“I am very excited to be working alongside Yami Bolo,” Mr Reid said.

Saturday’s event is being organised by Veterans In Action.

“Veterans in Action once again is pleased to bring to reggae enthusiasts two seasoned professionals who have a catalogue of great work and have been doing this for close to 40 years,” said spokesman Declan Harris.

The concert will also feature Mitchell Trott, Ramon Clark and Rivah. Music will be provided by DJs Juggling Jason, Blackstar, Three the Hard Way and Deejay Cheeky from Playboy Sound while Junior C and Ninja Cutty will serve as masters of ceremony.

Tickets are $30 in advance and available at People’s Pharmacy, Fish ‘N Tings, Somers Supermart, Hunt’s Liquor, Belvin’s Happy Valley and Vesey Street outlets, Scotty’s Liquor and online at www.bdatix.bm.
