Brothers deny Southampton burglary charges

Two brothers accused of burglarising a Southampton residence last week denied all charges when they appeared in Magistrates’ Court this morning.

Eighteen-year-old Shakari Edwards, of Pembroke, pleaded not guilty to trespassing at a Middle Road, Southampton, residence and stealing a BlackBerry tablet worth $500, a BlackBerry cellphone worth $900, an iPhone worth $800, as well as two Helly Hansen jackets and several other items of clothing and food of unknown value on February 3.

He also denied prowling at the Middle Road property, unlawfully wounding father and son James King and Jade King, taking a motorcycle without consent of the owner and handling a stolen licence plate on the same date.

Mr Edwards’s brother, 24-year-old Rayshun Edwards, of Sandys, also pleaded not guilty to theft and trespassing at the residence, as well as handling a stolen licence plate on February 3.

He also denied stealing a black motorcycle from the City Hall car park on January 6.

Prosecutor Maria Sofianos told the court that James King and Jade King allegedly returned home on the day in question to find that their property had been searched.

They are alleged to have found a cellphone on the lawn outside their home containing pictures of one of the defendants.

Later in the evening, Shakari Edwards allegedly returned to the property in search of the phone and an altercation occurred during which both complainants received multiple injuries and Mr Edwards was rendered unconscious.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo released Shakari Edwards on $5,000 bail with a like surety on the condition that he wear an electronic monitoring device, abide by a nightly curfew and report to Police three times a week.

Rayshun Edwards, who was found to be in contravention of a previous bail arrangement, was remanded into custody by Mr Tokunbo. A trial date at Magistrates’ Court has been set for June 12.
