Bermuda finish on high note

Strong finish: Dylan Powell

Bermuda ended their Junior Davis Cup pre-qualifying campaign in El Salvador on a winning note at the weekend.

The Islanders beat Nicaragua and Barbados in their final two matches to leave coach Steve Bean delighted.

“What a joy it has been for me working with these talented boys all week,” Bean said. “I have watched them grow in confidence and improve their playing day by day.

“Their positive attitudes and team spirit carried them and allowed them to come through victoriously in their last two matches.”

Despite finishing on a high, Bermuda were eliminated from the 2015 Junior Davis Cup. Bermuda claimed their first victory of the tournament with a gutsy display against Nicaragua, who they trounced 3-0 in their penultimate match.

Bermuda grasped early control of the tie after Nicaragua’s Ronny Hernandez was forced to retire in the third set through injury in the opening singles match with Bermuda’s Dylan Powell. Hernandez threw in the towel with Powell leading 4-3 after the two rivals split the first two sets.

Bermuda’s anxiously waited victory was sealed when Luke Astride-Sterling, the Island’s No 1 player, conquered Nicaragua’s No 1 player, Rodrigo Pereirg, 6-0, 6-3 to clinch the series.

Nicaragua defaulted the doubles. Bermuda encountered more resistance from Barbados in their final match before ultimately prevailing 2-1 to end their campaign on a winning note.

Once again Powell gave his team early impetus after recording a stunning victory 6-3, 6-3 against Robert Hayden.

Astride-Sterling then clinched the series after getting past Kyle Frost 7-6, 0-6, 6-3 despite playing with an injured foot.

Bermuda pair David Leader and Powell lost the doubles match 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 against Frost and Romani Mayers that went right down to the wire. But by then the damage had already been done.

“This was our best performance of the week,” added Bean.
