Rangers mourn batsman’s passing

David Stoneham, the ex-Southampton Rangers opening batsman, died at the weekend

The Southampton Rangers Sports Club is mourning the death of former club cricketer David “Bumla” Stoneham.

Stoneham, who won multiple league and cup honours with Rangers during his heyday as an opening batsman, died at the weekend.

According to a family source, he was found in a non responsive state at a public bus stop and later pronounced dead at King Edward VII Hospital.

Stoneham died less than a month after celebrating his 57th birthday.

Gerri Saltus, the Southampton Rangers president, said: “On behalf of Southampton Rangers Sports Club we would like to send our heartfelt condolences to the family of David Stoneham.

“This has been a difficult time for many in the community and we pray for comfort.”

Some of those who played alongside Stoneham also offered their condolences to the late cricketer’s family and reflected on his career.

John Tucker, the ex-Rangers skipper, said: “David, as a cricketer, was a very quiet individual who had a lot of talent.”

During a spell playing with Somerset Cricket Club in the 1980s under the captaincy of Tucker, who left Rangers to skipper Somerset’s Cup Match team, Stoneham won additional league and cup honours.

“David was a very gifted player,” Tucker said. “It was unfortunate he did not make the Cup Match team. But he tried and nevertheless those things happen.

“I am very sad to hear about David’s passing and my condolences go out to his family.”

Ricky Brangman, another ex-Rangers skipper and present club coach, said: “David was a good opening batsman and a good person and my condolences go out to his family.

“He was a really good player and is really going to be missed.

“David started with me in the junior ranks and we rose all the way to the senior ranks together.

“Since I took over as coach he has always offered me good advice and had my back. I just finished talking to him last week about the upcoming season.

“He is really going to be a big miss to the cricket team and the community.”
