Teachers Rugby Club have raised $30,000 to help pay for the education of Dante Noel-Simmons, the son of former Teachers player Devrae Noel-Simmons who died last year.

The money was raised through a series of fundraisers, with more than 20 members of the club running in the Bermuda Day Half Marathon. Companies also contributed, with Colonial Insurance making “a generous contribution”, while XL, Deloitte, Allianz, Ren Re and Catlin also matched the money their employees had raised.

Ron Hook, the Teachers’ president, presented a cheque for the amount to Dante and his mother, Susie Noel-Simmons at the club’s Denton Hurdle Memorial Day on Sunday.

All the Island’s rugby clubs gathered at the National Sports Centre for the occasion, with four matches between Teachers and The Rest being played over the course of the afternoon.

Teachers women won one game and lost one, as did the men’s teams. With the Second XV, who had an average age of 51, winning 38-10, while the First XV lost to The Rest 25-6.
