BCB pair honoured in ICC awards

Honoured: Richardson, second from left, alongside the other members of the Bermuda Under-19 management team; Sammy Robinson, Terry Fray, Lorenzo Tucker, and Clevie Wade

Two of Bermuda’s unsung heroes have been recognised by the International Cricket Council for their tireless work behind the scenes with the Island’s teams.

Russell Richardson, the manager of the Bermuda Under-19 squad, and Kellie Smith, have been honoured in the governing body’s annual development awards.

The pair were nominated by Bermuda Cricket Board for the Volunteer of the Year award, in Richardson’s case, while Smith won the Women’s Cricket: Behind the Scenes category.

In announcing the awards, the ICC praised Richardson for the “countless hours preparing, during and post [the ICC Regional under-17] tournament, ensuring all aspects were under control in the delivery of a first class international tournament”.

Smith was recognised for her “ongoing work to develop a grass-roots cricket programme designed to reignite women’s cricket in Bermuda.”

According to the BCB Smith’s schools programme brings the game to more than 300 girls, while she also plays an instrumental role in the BCB’s youths camps and programmes.

“I am delighted that these two hard-working individuals have been rightfully provided international recognition by the ICC for their incredible work,” Lloyd Fray, the BCB president, said. “As the BCB continues to deliver comprehensive programmes on ever decreasing resources the contribution of volunteers such as Russell and Kellie are critical to our ability to achieve our objectives.

“The reason that our development programme is first class is a testament to the dedicated Board members, staff and many volunteers that exhibit the “Spirit of Cricket” in their service to our community. Well done Kellie and Russell.”
