Teenager jailed for sex offence

A Warwick teenager was sentenced to 12 months in prison for having unlawful carnal knowledge of an underage girl between the ages of 14 and 16 when he appeared in Supreme Court.

At a previous court appearance, Malik Zuill, 18, had pleaded guilty to two counts of having unlawful carnal knowledge with the girl, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, in January 2014.

At the time of the offence, Zuill was 17.

Puisne Judge Carlisle Greaves sentenced Zuill to 12 months’ imprisonment on each count, to run concurrently, and to be followed by three years of probation.

He also ordered that Zuill be assessed for a sex offenders programme, that he participate in and complete any other programme deemed necessary by court services, that he abstain from the use of alcohol and illicit drugs and that he be subject to random drug testing.

Defence lawyer Elizabeth Christopher said that she would be appealing the sentence and made an application for bail pending sentencing, but Mr Justice Greaves refused the request.
