Weather forces cancellations and outages

At least 3,475 Belco customers experienced power outages due to yesterday’s adverse weather while flights were cancelled throughout the day.

The Bermuda Weather Service had issued a thunderstorm advisory for mid to late afternoon.

Cancelled flights in and out of Bermuda were due to blizzard conditions on the eastern New England coast and other bad weather in the US and Canada according to the US National Weather Service.

Cancelled arrivals included two Delta flights (11.08pm and 12.42pm); JetBlue (11.10am); Air Canada (12.05pm); and WestJet (5.15pm).

Departures that were cancelled included JetBlue (12.08pm), Delta (12.09pm, 1.42pm and 2.50pm), Air Canada (1.05pm) and WestJet (6.05pm).

Last night was predicted to be mostly cloudy with occasional showers, winds westerly with gale force gusts to storm force.

Winds were to decrease to strong-to-gale force, with gale force gusts late into the night.

The Bermuda Weather Service also issued a small craft warning valid from this morning through Tuesday night.

Belco issued the following information on outages and ongoing restorations:

•12.01pm Ess Hill 965 customers (restoration took 1 hour)

•12.35pm Flatts Hill 458 customers (48 mins)

•12.57pm Lighthouse Southampton 650 customers (1 hr, 21 mins)

•1.05pm Admiralty 39 customers (46 mins)

•3.46pm Lighthouse (2hr, 1 min)

•3.54pm Naval Annex 57 customers

•5.13pm Ess Hill 965 customers (34 mins)

•5.15pm Fractious/Walsingham 297 (restored after 2 hours, 31 mins)

•5.21pm NAS/St David’s (restored in 1 hour, 13 mins)

•6.36pm Naval Annex/Graybank 44 customers.

A Belco spokesperson said that crews would continue working to restore power throughout the storm conditions.
