200th anniversary of sailor’s death marked

A memorial to Midshipman Richard Sutherland Dale in St Peter’s churchyard, St George’s

The 200th anniversary of the death of Midshipman Dale will be marked this weekend in St George’s.

Midshipman Richard Sutherland Dale became the final casualty of the War of 1812 when he died in St George’s on February 22, 1815, at the age of 20.

Midshipman Dale was on-board the USS President, which was seized by British ships in January of 1815, and brought to Bermuda as a prisoner. The people of St George’s cared for the injured sailor until he died, five days after the US ratified the Treaty of Ghent, formally ending the war.

On Saturday at 5pm, dignitaries and residents will gather at King’s Square in St George’s, where the young midshipman died.

A commemorative service will be held at 5.15pm at his grave in St Peter’s historic churchyard. A reception and dinner, attended by US Consul General Robert Settje, will be held later in the evening.
