Four clubs in chase for Jones

Set for move: Jones

Malachi Jones is leaving Willow Cuts ahead of the 2015 cricket season, the Bermuda all-rounder confirmed yesterday.

However, the Bermuda and Somerset Cup Match player has not confirmed his destination, with four clubs on his list, including former side Southampton Rangers whom he left in 2010.

“I’m definitely moving, I just don’t know where to,” Jones said. “Cleveland [County], Warwick Workmen’s [Club], Bailey’s Bay or Southampton Rangers, one of the four.”

Rumours began circulating last year that Jones, the Willow Cuts captain, was considering a move to Bailey’s Bay this season.

His departure could spark several departures and already there is talk that players are planning to leave the club before next month’s transfer deadline.

Chris Foggo, Ricardo Brangman and Chris Douglas are among those understood to be leaving, possibly for Devonshire Recreation Club, who have a new coach in Dwayne Leverock.

Some are saying that Cuts may struggle to field a team, something experienced player Dexter Basden denied yesterday. “We’ll have a team, regardless, if I have to play a lot of my youngsters then they will have to play,” said the former captain who has suggested his playing days are over.

“It’s a bit too early for me to comment, but we’ll have a team.”

Cuts finished fourth in the Premier Division last season under Jones’s leadership, although they failed to win any trophies.

Cuts reached the final of the Twenty20 tournament and were scheduled to meet Rangers but the match was called off because of safety concerns after a shooting incident in Southampton hours after the semi-final matches in St David’s.

The final was not played and it is not known whether the Bermuda Cricket Board has planned to stage the final at the start of the new season.
