Title rivals clash with everything still to play for

Chasing history: Chris Caisey and his Hamilton Parish team-mates travel to Somerset tomorrow with the Premier Division title in their sights

One team has never won the league, for the other it has been 22 years, but both have a chance to move closer to their goal when Hamilton Parish host leaders Somerset Trojans in a top-of-the-table clash at Wellington Oval tomorrow.

Both teams have dropped valuable points lately, Parish losing to Southampton Rangers before snatching a late point against St George’s last weekend, while Trojans were held by PHC in a scoreless draw on February 12. Still, the two teams lead the title race, with just a point separating them while the chasing pack of Dandy Town, PHC and North Village have a good chance this weekend to close the gap.

“We’re just trying to focus on our own game and trying to get maximum points,” Trevin Ming, the Somerset captain, said.

Four wins would clinch it for them, but they have a tough run-in with matches after this weekend against Devonshire Cougars, North Village and Southampton Rangers. However, they are not looking any further ahead than tomorrow’s game.

“It’s very important, every game is important, we just have to get the three points,” Ming said. “The only thing we can do is focus on our games ahead and hopefully get the three points.

“We’re all thinking about it [winning the league], keeping high spirits and just trying to get the work done. As players we just focus on the next game and not worry about the other teams. We need to get our work done and everything will fall into place.”

Parish have the chance to reclaim top spot, but a loss would not only enable Trojans to move four points ahead of them but Town, PHC and Village could close the gap. When Trojans and Parish met in the league on November 1, the visiting side came away with a 1-0 win at Somerset Cricket Club.

With Dandy Town not playing their match against Robin Hood until next Thursday, PHC have a good chance to move back into third place, although taking points off bottom team Flanagan’s Onions will not be easy. Onions beat Zebras 2-1 in November and with survival hanging on the line they need to start picking up points.

Village will have the edge over lowly St George’s who make the trip to Bernard Park without first-choice goalkeeper as Charles Marshall III, is serving a one-match ban after being sent off last weekend against Parish. Cougars have found themselves looking nervously over their shoulder as they sit just a place — and a point — ahead of the drop zone after a recent slump in which they have picked up just one point in five matches in the second half, losing to Onions, Parish, Hood and Town.

Tomorrow’s away match against Rangers represents another tough challenge for Cougars as Maurice Lowe’s side are gaining momentum at the right time and are difficult to beat.

Last weekend’s win over Village lifted them up to seventh in the standings and they could climb even higher with another three points. On the other hand, Cougars will climb above them if they can manage a first victory since November 30.

Boulevard will meet Wolves at Police Field in the First Division this weekend as the leaders look to bounce back from last weekend’s crushing loss to BAA Wanderers.

Boulevard are still two points clear at the top with four games remaining but can ill-afford to drop further points, with things getting tighter at the top with eight points separating the leaders from Wolves in fifth.

Devonshire Colts, second, meet Young Men’s Social Club at Bernard Park while fourth-placed Somerset Eagles travel to meet St David’s. X-roads take on Paget Lions at Garrison Field, with BAA’s match this weekend put back to next Thursday when they face Ireland Rangers.
