Powering forward: action from the weekend's rugby

Police and Renegades cruised into the final of the Nicol Shield with comfortable wins on Saturday.

Police ran in six tries in a 39-5 mauling of Teachers with Davis twins Paull and Durnferd both scoring twice. Roedolf van der Westhuizen, the Bermuda coach, and Cobus Vermaak added the others, while Mike Kane kicked two conversions and a penalty. Dan Cole added a further conversion, with Michael Dill’s try the lone bright point for Teachers.

In the second semi-final, Brian Archibold scored a try and converted two others as Renegades beat Mariners 29-7. Paul Dobinson and Callum Maule also cross, with Paul Kelly grabbing two more. Mariners’ points came from a Steven Husbands try, which Rory Dublin converted.

Mariners women at least had something to celebrate, winning their Scully Cup semi-final against Renegades 1-0 thanks to a Deneika Borden score. Police women will join them in the final after a 4-2 win over Teachers, Mika Tomita scored twice, while Saphia Charters and Karyn Coetzee also crossed for Police.

Teachers’ scores came from Cerise Woolley and Jo Thivierge.
