Premier’s official residence up for rent

Historic building: Clifton is listed as being available to rent for $15,000 a month

Clifton, the “official residence of the Premier”, is up for rent, according to an online listing.

The historic building was listed for rent on the Coldwell Banker website which stated that the property would be available starting in April with a monthly rent of $15,000.

The listing describes the property as a “tastefully furnished, fabulous executive property on the outskirts of Hamilton offering approximately two acres of manicured grounds”.

“The main house offers lovely entry, spacious living room, full dining room, sitting room, gourmet kitchen, laundry room and powder room on the ground floor.

“The upper floor comprises two spacious bedroom suites plus two additional rooms that are currently decorated as an office and den but could easily be third and fourth bedrooms. Additional guest quarters offering two bedrooms with full bath and sitting room.”

The 200-year-old property was used to house colonial civil servants and the island’s Chief Justices, but it slowly fell into a state of disrepair.

In 2006 it underwent a $1.5 million renovation with Government justifying the cost by saying it would become the official residence of all future Premiers.

Premier Alex Scott lived in the home during the last few months of his tenure, but his successor Premier Ewart Brown elected to remain at his own property in Smith’s.

Deputy Governor David Arkley later moved into the home, followed by Premier Paula Cox. Premier Craig Cannonier took up residence in the home after the OBA won the 2012 general election and remained there for several months after he stepped down, leading to some public criticism.
