The Basketball Academy for Girls is aiming to raise $26,000 towards a team trip to Montreal, scheduled for the end of March.

The girls will compete against four high school and club teams in the Canadian city.

Volunteer coordinator and parent representative Erna DeGraff said: “We have a team of 13 young ladies ranging from 13 years old to 15 years old, representing different schools throughout the Island, and they will be travelling to Montreal during the Easter break.”

The students, who attend Warwick Academy, Sandys Middle School, Mount Saint Agnes, Berkeley Institute, CedarBridge Academy, Lighthouse Christian Academy and TN Tatem Middle School, have planned a chicken cookout pot luck for Friday to be held at the Sunshine League, beginning at 5pm, to help to raise the money they need.

The Sunshine League is located on King Street in Hamilton.

She explained that there are no other girls’ basketball teams in Bermuda other than school teams.

“The girls all play with their school teams, so there are interschool games,” she said.

“The trip is to expose our players to a higher level of basketball. They will be playing against four high schools and club teams in Montreal.

“We have been actively fundraising for this venture and we just need a little push,” she said of the upcoming cookout event.

Ms DeGraff said: “We’ve held a tag day, car washes, and this is our second pot luck.”

Tickets for the pot luck are $15 and are available at the door or from Ms DeGraff on 335-0984.

“We are also holding another car wash at Bermuda Athlete Association on Saturday, March 7, between 8am and 5pm,” she said.
