Town’s happy hunting ground

Goose Gosling Field continues to be a happy hunting ground for Dandy Town, the Premier Division leaders.

Last March they thrashed Devonshire Cougars there 7-2 to clinch their seventh league title. Two nights ago they needed victory to stay in the title race and scored a late goal against Robin Hood to secure the win that lifted them up to third in the standings, four points behind leaders Somerset with three games remaining.

It was a must-win match for the Hornets ahead of tomorrow’s crucial match with second place Hamilton Parish when one of the teams could be eliminated from the race.

“I wish this was our home field, actually,” Jomar Wilkinson, the Town coach, said after Thursday’s win.

“We have a good record round here and we really enjoy playing here on a good surface. We’re able to play the football that we want to play.”

Town should be favourites on their home field where they have enjoyed some good results this season.

Kieshon Smith, the Hamilton Parish coach, was at the match at BAA Field, having a look at his team’s next two opponents as they push for a first league title.

Town, however, are not ready to concede as champions just yet.

“Definitely Sunday is a very important game and hopefully the guys can recover in time and put in a shift on Sunday which is going to be needed,” Wilkinson said. “Hamilton Parish are not going to be a pushover but we’re definitely up to the challenge and looking forward to it.”

Just three matches are scheduled for tomorrow as PHC travel to Wellington Oval for a match against second-from-bottom St George’s that is crucial for both teams for different reasons. It will be the first of three home games for St George’s as they close out their season.

At the other end of the table, just three points separate the bottom four teams with bottom team Flanagan’s Onions facing a do-or-die encounter with Southampton Rangers at Southampton Oval. Onions are two points adrift but their -11 goal difference is all the worst in the league, which could hurt them in the race for survival.

In the First Division, Boulevard, the league leaders, are away to Young Men’s Social Club, Devonshire Colts, second, entertain Paget at Police Field while third and fourth BAA and Somerset Eagles play St David’s and Wolves respectively at Goose Gosling Field and White Hill Field. Wolves’ match against Eagles has been switched from Devonshire Recreation Club.

In the other match, Ireland Island Rangers are at home to X Roads.
