Minors runs away with the gold in Boston championships

Hat-trick: Dage Minors

Dage Minors, Bermuda’s middle distance runner, had an outstanding performance at last weekend’s Northeast 10 Track and Field Indoor Championships at the Reggie Lewis Centre in Boston.

Watched by his parents Delbert and Daltonell as well as his aunt Darnell Hollis and her granddaughter Azuré, Minors ran an exhausting four events on Saturday night in the space of a couple of hours as he had three first place finishes.

First up was the men’s distance medley race which Minors anchored with his 1000 metres, leading his school, Franklin Pierce University ‘A’ to victory in 10 minutes, 10.41 seconds. Other distances in the medley were 400, 800 and 1,200 metres.

Minors then won the 800 metres in a time of 1:54.67 before anchoring his team to victory in the 4x800 metres relay in a time of 7:47.23 in a close finish with second-placed Stonehill ‘A’ (7:48.41). In the final event Minors anchored the 4x400 metre relay team to a fifth-place finish in 3:27.19, seven seconds behind the first place team American International ‘A’ which was the top school overall on points. Franklin Pierce, of New Hampshire, finished fourth overall in the team scoring among the 11 schools.

“We had seen him do outdoor but had never seen him do indoor,” said father Delbert. “In the 800m there were 12 guys in the race and he was in lane one and they boxed him in, but after the first lap he took the lead and kept going and no one got close to him.

“He had to conserve his energy because he did the 1000m in the medley race just before that. He didn’t disappoint.”

Minors, 19, is back in Boston this weekend with his school for the NEICAAA Championships yesterday and today at Boston University Track and Field Centre.
