Teen trio ready to take on the world

Selected: Mallory

Bermuda will be among the countries competing at this month’s Under 14 World Junior Team Championships in the Dominican Republic.

Trey Mallory, Ben Lines and Tego Bean, who were selected based on their rankings, level of play and training attendance, will represent the Island at the tournament.

The trio will be accompanied in the Caribbean by coach Gavin Manders, who is prepping his players for what promises to be a gruelling tournament.

“It will be extremely tough competition, with many top juniors from around the world, so they will have to perform at a very high level to contend,” Manders said. “But I believe in them and the work they have put in and we are looking forward to the challenge.”

The championships will be held in Santo Domingo from March 16 to 21.

The tournament format is the same as the Davis Cup with ties consisting of two singles and a doubles match.

“I will be able to coach them while they play their matches, so I’ll be on court for every single one of their matches giving them strategic advise and making adjustments as the matches go on,” Manders said.

“I believe I will be an asset to the boys as I have so much experience representing Bermuda at the highest level and also because I already have a great rapport with the boys. I worked with them quite a lot even before I was chosen as the coach. So our relationship will help us connect better while going through these matches.

“I work with Ben and Trey in the Manders Elite Programme that we run at Tucker’s Point for our top juniors. Tego Bean is away at tennis academy, where his family have given him the opportunity to further his education while training five days a week.”
