Valentine’s events promote school spirit

The CedarBridge Academy Family Studies department hosted its pre-Valentine luncheon fundraiser for 40 persons

On Thursday, February 12, the CedarBridge Academy Family Studies department hosted its pre-Valentine Luncheon fundraiser for 40 people. The students had all the trimmings that went along with Valentine’s Day. The event and menu was well thought out, delightfully delicious and a substantial two-course meal that was worth the price of $30.

This event was organised by the Meal Management and Hospitality class. The young chefs of CBA perfected their culinary skills under the watchful instruction of a well-known teacher of the Family Studies Department, Ms Felix, and were assisted by a parent of our CBA family, Ms Sonia Davis.

The students of the Meal Management class thoroughly planned out a balanced two-course meal, which included scrumptious Baked Stuffed Lobster, Apricot Glazed Whole Cornish Hens, Herb Rice, Baked Potatoes with Sour Cream and Garlic Butter, Steamed Vegetables and Garden Fresh Salad. Dessert was even more mouthwatering. It included Chocolate Cake; Ice Cream; Strawberries Dipped in Chocolate and Chocolate-filled Wafers.

Khilah Ashonte Smith, one of the young chefs, took control of the Valentine’s decor under the guidance of Ms Renee Lewis.

The food laboratory’s entire room was impressively transformed and showered in a Valentine-themed decor that was guaranteed to melt hearts. One of the objectives of the Valentine’s Luncheon was for students to show appreciation and love to their parents, family members, CBA teachers and support staff. This was a time when students would have seen the importance of building positive relationships and learning the ropes of entrepreneurship.

CedarBridge Academy is definitely a place where students can showcase their knowledge, talents and skills while learning to be an entrepreneur in the safety of their school environment and supported by family and staff.

The CBA Meal Management and Hospitality Class of 2015 would like to thank Principal Kalmar Richards and Deputies for providing the opportunity for them to showcase their knowledge, talent and skills and to let the Bermuda public know that they are worth investing money on and willing to contribute to their country’s sustainable development.

The following day, 64 CedarBridge Academy family members participated in our very first “So You Think You Can Bake House Competition”. Students, faculty and CBA’s supporting staff from both our competitive houses Red and Blue were encouraged to enter the baking competition in hopes of earning points for their houses. The categories were S1 and S2, S3 and S4 and Adults. There were loads of sections to enter for the bake goods, such as cookies, decorated cupcakes, healthy lunch box and much more.

The judging and competition took place in the heart of the library sending the ambience of a normally quiet place into one full of chatter and sweet aromas. Blue house and Red house banners greeted the participants as they flooded the library with their bake goods, all with confidence in their productions.

The baked goods were judged and graded by student leaders, Mrs Gloria Francis, a retired family studies teacher, Mr Greg Wales, the owner of the direct source of our wonderful meals here in school, Krave Kitchen, Ms Taiyana Rayner, our personal care teacher, Mr Earl Godfrey and Ms Marie Beach, our healthy schools coordinator. Student leaders learned how to judge baked goods on their appearance, texture, flavour and presentation.

The rival house received points for pupils who were awarded first, second and third place and participate. The overall winning house and winner in each category were given certificates in year level assemblies. We kindly received gracious donations from MarketPlace Supermarkets. Mrs Joanna Anderson said: “The purpose of the competition was to promote school spirit, display CBA family members’ baking skills and encourage students to participate in the Annual Agricultural Exhibition Food Division.”
