Keeping it all in the family

Family reunion: Pat Lewis, Ezekiel Lewis, Peter James and Priya Lewis

Grenada’s whirlwind tour of Bermuda proved to be a family affair for team manager Peter James who has very close ties to the Island.

James’ elder brother Herman James has resided here for some 40 years.

His niece Pat Lewis is married to Jahmahi Lewis, a cousin of Zeko Lewis, who captained Bermuda to a 2-0 victory against the visitors at the National Sports Centre on Sunday, and Jahnazae Swan who came on as a substitute for Lewis after he suffered a knee injury late in the match.

Andrew Bascome, the Bermuda coach, is the godfather of James’s great-niece Priya and great-nephew Ezekiel.

“It’s a small world, but it’s good to know that when you travel you can see people you know or are related to,” James said. “It’s like home.”

With so many family ties, James’s niece Pat made attending Sunday’s match a top priority.

“This was definitely an opportunity I wasn’t going to let my children miss,” she said. “I was so excited and it was definitely a wonderful family reunion. It was a blessing to see my uncle manage a team playing against Bermuda who are coached by Andrew Bascome who is my children’s godpa.” Despite enduring mixed results on the football pitch, James thoroughly enjoyed his brief visit here.

“This is my third time here and I did have a good time,” he said. “Unfortunately we lost the second game, but it is a learning process for us and we are rebuilding.

“We had not played many competitive matches before coming here. Actually this was the second competitive match we have had this year. Our season ended in November.”
