Huddersfield expect Wells to be ready

Training hard: Wells is working on being ready for the World Cup Qualifiers

Huddersfield Town expect Nahki Wells to be fit for Bermuda’s World Cup Qualifiers against Bahamas in two weeks time.

Wells has missed his club side’s past three league games with a shoulder injury he picked up against Reading when he collided with Adam Federici, the Reading goalkeeper.

The Bermuda striker suffered a sprained sternoclavicular joint in the head-on collision, an injury more associated with playing rugby than football.

However, the general feeling at Huddersfield, who said Wells was “training brilliantly,” is that he will be back in time to play in one of the three matches they have before Bermuda’s game in the Bahamas on March 25.

Huddersfield play away at Birmingham City on Saturday, then have back-to-back home games against Norwich City, on March 17, and Fulham on March 21.

Wells scored in the game against Reading after suffering the injury, and Huddersfield revealed that he had not been able to shake manager Chris Powell’s hand when he was substituted “because he could not raise his arm.”

“He’s training in a non-impact manner, doing the warm-up with the lads and then effectively doing some work on his own, he can’t join in with competitive stuff just yet,” a Huddersfield spokesman said. “He’s training brilliantly by all accounts, but he’s just not allowed to get near anyone in case he takes a bang on it.”

The sternoclavicular joint is in the area of the upper chest just below the chin, where the collarbone meets the sternum.

Huddersfield will be just as keen as Bermuda to have Wells return to action, the Sky Bet Championship side have lost three games in his absence, scoring just one goal in the process, and are 17 in the league, 11 points above the relegation zone.
