Young students discover power of the pen

Imagination: Dalton E Tucker's creative writers

Ayesha Vickers, of Dalton E Tucker, and her team of creative writers met with Young Observer last week.

Mrs Vickers explained to us: “At Dalton E Tucker Primary Creative Writing Club (P4-P6), the goal of our writing club is to help break down the walls of intimidation felt by reluctant writers, and to challenge able writers to be more descriptive and imaginative in their writing.

“The activity we have been working on these last few weeks has helped reluctant writers to grasp one concept before moving on, and encouraged skilled writers to dig deep in creating words and situations that show feeling and emotion.

“Each student writes their own introduction, then switched their book with a peer, who created a problem, then switched their book with another peer, and the last student had the task of fixing the problem or conflict and bringing the story to a close.

“This was a fun activity for the students in that it helped to decrease the fear for reluctant writers who shun the idea of writing a story containing all the elements in one sitting, and challenged more able students to be creative and focus on consistency and flow in developing different parts of a story.”

Creative writers: Sterling Brown, Ava Stowe, Ari Outerbridge, Ethan Daniels, Abigail Frost, Raphael Rudolph, Brianna Smith, Arianna Smith, Oleira McLenon, Chemajh Raynor, Vanessa Daley, Cashayna Grant, Kyla Philpott, Anaya Wade.

The Vegetable Attack

By Kyla, Abigail and Cashayna

There once was a kid named Dan. Dan hated to eat vegetables. All he ever ate were grains, meats and fruits. His mother never worried if he didn’t eat his vegetables because she knew that one day he would learn the consequences of hating vegetables. Friday was pizza lunch day at home, and Dan was busy picking tomatoes out of his pizza, when all of a sudden one of the tomatoes jumped up and bit Dan on the lip!

Then, some of the broccoli Dan threw in the toilet earlier crept out of the toilet and crawled up Dan’s leg!

Soon, all the vegetables from the fridge and countertops were attacking him! Dan felt helpless but his mom did not do anything to help him.

His mom waited about 15 minutes before she decided to help him. Before she pulled the vegetables off of him, she took his picture as a reminder.

Then she commanded, “Down vegetables!” Then the vegetables scurried back to their places. Things have changed, and now Dan eats his vegetables all the time!
