Clearwater Middle School held its annual Multicultural Extravaganza last month.

This is the event where the Advisory classes prepare a sample of culinary delights for guests from their chosen country.

This year, the lead-up to the culminating event was even more meaningful, interesting and competitive.

Advisory classes paired up and students began researching information about a country they had selected.

They learned about the culture and customs, language, food, and some fun facts.

They were required to prepare posters or visual presentations for the Extravaganza and a presentation for assembly.

This time the presentation became a competition and prizes were awarded.

Students performed dances in country costumes, spoke new languages and dialects and gave some fact-filled and fun-filled new information about countries with which they were familiar.

Our judges for the assembly presentation were: MP Nandi Outerbridge and Mrs Leone Samuels, Mentor from Department of Education.

On the day of the Extravaganza our hall was abuzz with activity as each country set up and tried to outdo the other.

The hall was decorated with flags from the ceiling and a myriad of colourful posters; tasty dishes teased the taste buds and cultural music filled the air.

We had performances from our M1 students dancing to music from Dominican Republic; the African Dancers, Mother Sally (Barbados) and Scottish dancers.

It was an exciting evening, one thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Congratulations to the organising team of: Miss Kristin Hamilton, Social Studies teacher who served as chairperson, Mrs Karen Holmes, French teacher, and Mistress of Ceremonies for the evening, and Miss Georgette Leslie, Spanish teacher.
