‘Pest’ birds have a right to live

A reader objects to proposals to cull feral chickens

Dear Sir,

It is with great sadness I read and hear the news concerning the culling of chickens, pigeons and crows.

After reading the statistics, I felt I had to write a letter to the editor.

My mom raised me to love and care for all animals. God said He created “all winged creatures” and that “everything He created was good”.

Animals do not have a voice and those of us who love and cherish all animals should speak on their behalf. I am one such voice.

It is important that certain species should be preserved, however, all animals are special and they all should be preserved. Each bird has a distinct purpose and they have just as much right to live as we do.

Pigeons are considered to be one of the most intelligent birds and the crows fill a niche in the ecosystem like any other animals.

They rid the earth of certain pests and eat carrion, which can cause disease. They act as pollinators of certain seeds and fruits. Chickens belong on a farm, not out in the wild.

If such culling continues, please know that I will not be voting for this Government in the next general election.
