The deadline for entries to the Corrections Week essay competition has been extended to allow more students to take part.

The competition is part of a host of activities that mark international Corrections Week between May 3 and 9.

The winner of the competition gets to spend a day with Lieutenant Colonel Edward Lamb, the Commissioner of Corrections.

The deadline for the competition has been extended to March 27.

Shawnette Somner, the education officer for the corrections department, said: “Last year was the first time the Bermuda Department of Corrections held a week of activities to celebrate Corrections Week.

“Employees participated in a number of activities while some activities allowed us to reach out to seniors, retired officers, and other members of the community.”

She added: “Unfortunately, last year, we did not get any entries for the essay competition from any of the private schools, but we did get entries from both public high schools.

“This year Corrections Week will be held earlier and the information about the essay competition was sent out to schools in February.

“This year homeschools are invited to participate and we hope to get entries from all schools.”

The competition is open to students from S2 through S4, with their task the submission of an essay between of 400 and 500 words titled, “If I Were Commissioner for the Bermuda Department of Corrections”.

The winner will be announced on April 10. For more information, contact Ms Somner on 234 0555 ext 218 or via e-mail sosomner@gov.bm.
