Irby leads the way

Three records were broken and two equalled during yesterday’s finals of the Middle Schools Track and Field Championships at the National Sports Centre.

Saltus over-13 pair, Ashley Irby and Zekiah Lewis, set new marks in the 1,500 metres and long jump during an exciting day of competition. Irby, a Front Street record holder, set a new record in the 1,500 metres with her winning time of 5 mins, 07.60 secs. Lewis achieved a new mark in the long jump with her leap of 5.17 metres (16ft, 11 ins).

Also establishing a new record was Clevonte Lodge of Whitney Institute who broke the tape in 57.60 seconds to win the under-13 boys 400 metres.

Za’Kayza Parsons of TN Tatem and Cobi Thomas of Dellwood both equalled records yesterday; Parsons in the under-12 girls 200 metres in 26.90 seconds and Thomas in the over-13 boys long jump with a best leap of 5.77 metres (18ft, 11ins).

Irby picked up three titles, winning the 400 metres final in 1:03.31 and the 800 metres final in 2:36.55. Lewis added the triple jump to her long jump win, with a top leap of 10.11 metres.

Selah Tuzo of Saltus claimed three victories, winning the under 12 girls 400, 800 and 1500 metres, while Jaden Masters of Whitney Institute won the under-12 high jump and long jump. Taylor Hines of Bermuda High won the under 13 girls 200 and 400 metres and Jessie Marshall of Saltus the under-13 800 and 1500 metres.

Jah-Qala Tucker of TN Tatem won the under-13 girls long jump and shot put while Brijette Basden showed talent in the sprints and jumps by winning the over-13 girls 100 and 200 metres and high jump. Jayden Ming of Warwick Academy won the 800 and 1500 metres final for over-13 boys and Kenyarde McQueen of Dellwood the under-13 boys discus and shot events.

Nirobi Smith-Mills of Saltus landed three titles, the under-12 400, 800 and 1,500 metres.

The Primary Schools finals will be held today starting at 9.30am.
