Man accused of headbutting woman

A 35-year-old man was bailed in Magistrates’ Court this morning after he pleaded guilty to assaulting a woman and unlawfully damaging property belonging to her.

Devaughn Raynor, of no fixed address, admitted attacking the woman in Pembroke on March 21, and damaging a kitchen window, a stove and a lock on a bedroom door.

Prosecutor Alan Richards said that both the defendant and complainant, who were living together, had been out separately on the night the offence took place and that Raynor had made numerous attempts to contact the complainant.

He added that later in the evening, the complainant saw Raynor walking on Union Street and that he started shouting profanities at her, before headbutting her in the face and punching her in the left ear.

When the complainant went to a nearby club to have her injuries assessed, the Police were called and officers located the defendant, who was bleeding profusely from his hand, on Dundonald Street.

In court, Raynor said that he had been celebrating after working for a week in a government training programme and had planned on taking the complainant out later in the evening.

“After all was said and done, I realised I was wrong and gave myself up to Police,” he added.

Mr Tokunbo granted $5,000 bail on the condition that Raynor have no contact with the complainant and stay away from her residence.

He ordered a social inquiry report, a drug assessment and a victim impact statement.

The matter was adjourned to May 15 for sentencing.

Also in court, a Hamilton Parish man was bailed after he admitted attacking a man.

William Smith, 22, pleaded guilty to unlawfully wounding Kenneth Rawlins with the intent of doing him bodily harm in Warwick on March 20.

The court heard that the defendant and complainant had been living at the same address when the offence occurred.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo granted $5,000 bail with a like surety on the condition that Smith have no contact with the complainant, abide by an 8pm to 6am curfew, and reside at the address provided to the courts.

The matter was adjourned to April 15 for mention.
