Tsunami warning exercise tomorrow

A tsunami warning exercise is set for tomorrow — and the public is urged to “like” the Bermuda Weather Service on Facebook.

Given Bermuda’s reliance on social media in the absence of a siren alarm system, connecting with the BWS online will enable the service to alert the Island quickly in the event of a genuine tsunami threat.

The exercise will simulate an undersea earthquake which triggers an submarine landslide a couple of hundred miles off the coast of Cape Canaveral in the United States.

Carried out in conjunction with other countries in the Atlantic and Caribbean area, the exercise will test the relaying of information, watches and warnings.

Although many locals view the chances of a tsunami as remote, BWS director Kimberley Zuill said the waves have struck Bermuda before: in 1929, a similar earthquake originating off the Grand Banks of Newfoundland caused a tsunami that reached the Island.

In that case, a 70ft dredger moored at Flatts was torn free of its moorings by the tidal wave.

For tomorrow’s exercise, the BWS will send out communications, while the Emergency Measures Organisation (EMO) will hold a talk on readiness and preparation.

Warnings will be sent out via the Bermuda Weather Channel on CableVision and WOW, the weather telephone recordings (977, 9771, 9772, and 9773), www.weather.bm, BWS Facebook page or broadcast via VHF Radio (via Bermuda Radio).
