Young reporters investigate new doughnut shop

Taste tests: BEN’s Young Reporters meet Maurico Thomas, owner of new shop Glaze (Photo by Brooklyn Marshall)

The Young Reporters is an after-school club run by Bermuda Education Network as part of their Horizons programme at Northlands. Last week, the reporters met Maurico Thomas, owner of Glaze.

• Glaze is the new doughnut shop on Bermudiana Road.

Maurico Thomas, the owner, also owns Four Star Pizza.

When we visited Glaze at 4pm on a Friday, they were quite busy.

Mr Thomas told us that Glaze gets about 100 customers a day. We asked him why he started Glaze and he said: “I have a sweet tooth.”

They can make 300 different flavours and the doughnuts cost either $2.25 or $3.25. Does Mr Thomas test the doughnuts? “Yes, I taste them every week to make sure they taste good. I want customers to taste the Glaze.”

• When you pass Glaze, you cannot resist going in.

They are open every day except Sunday. The day starts very early for the people who work at Glaze. They start baking at about 4am so that the doughnuts are fresh and ready for breakfast.

The selection will make your mouth water. Choices include strawberry, chocolate, vanilla, lemon and peach. They even have a giant doughnut. Customers said they taste yummy.

• Mr Thomas is the owner of Glaze. He is a nice young gentleman. He let us taste a doughnut. He’s tall and has big feet and his hands are giant. When you go in the shop it smells nice.

Do you know why the people working there wear hats? It’s to make sure they don’t get hair on the doughnuts!

Mr Thomas explained that doughnut holes have to be ordered specially because they are harder to make than regular doughnuts. They roll around in the hot oil when you fry them so it’s hard to get them cooked on both sides.
